How to save Clematis Seeds

Often when you picture a seed it’s a smaller, hard black ball. And then there are clematis seeds. If Dr. Seuss designed a seed this might be it.

How to collect clematis seeds

  1. Wait for the petals to fade and drop off.

  2. In place of the flower will be a wirey firework-like structure. It will be resistant to touch and green in colour. Wait for this to turn fade in colour and become whispy like a feather.

  3. Collect and store in a paper bag.

Ok, here's the catch. This shows you how to save clematis seeds, but if you are hoping to propagate clematis, seeds are not the best way. Propagation by cutting is the fastest and most effective. Because of this, you do not need to worry about the seeds staying on the plant. I prefer to leave them for mid summer and fall interest in the garden.

It is my goal with Buying Thyme to connect the community to nature and practice sustainability practices so we can better our patch of the ecosystem.
