How to save Balloon Flower Seeds

In Southern Ontario, Balloon Flowers (Platycodon grandiflorus) are putting out seed pods that are ready to collect at end of July, beginning of August. What do the seed pods look like and how do you collect the seeds?

How to collect Balloon flower seeds

  1. Wait for the petals to fade and drop off.

  2. The ‘back’ of the flower will have a bulge if it has been pollinated. Wait for this to turn brown and crispy.

  3. Crack open the brown pod to access seeds. Collect and store in a paper bag.

It is my goal with Buying Thyme to connect the community to nature and practice sustainability practices so we can better our patch of the ecosystem.
