How to Collect Cardinal Climber Seeds
Cardinal Climbers, Ipomoea × multifida, are a fast growing, vining annual in southern Ontario. They attract bees and hummingbirds with their bright red, trumpet-shaped flowers. Their seeds are easy to collect and store for future seasons. Part of our Speedy Seed Saving Series.
In southern Ontario (zone 6-7) cardinal climber vines are annuals. The time to collect seed pods will vary depending on when the plant was started. Once you see blooms, collections will follow!
These seeds can be collected and saved for sowing in the following year. To store seeds without moisture issues use a paper envelope like these envelopes that we use from Amazon.

How to Collect Cardinal Climber Seeds
Once the flower is pollinated a bulge will form at the base and the petals will wilt and fall off.
Wait for the bulge to turn brown and ‘crispy’. It will give easily with slight pressure between your fingers
Crack the seed pod with your fingers to expose the small black seeds. Usually there will be between 1-3 seeds per pod.
